Four killed by police firing at Bangladesh port

December 5, 2000
Web posted at: 9:30 PM HKT (1330 GMT)

MONGLA, Bangladesh (Reuters) -- At least four people were killed and more than 100 wounded when police opened fire to disperse thousands of striking dock workers trying to storm administrative offices at Bangladesh's Mongla port on Tuesday, officials and witnesses said.

About 2,000 dock workers have been on strike since Friday trying to force authorities to employ more casual workers.

Violence erupted when police moved to prevent the workers from marching to the port offices.

"Police opened fire when the workers refused to disperse, and at one stage turned on the securitymen. The shootout left at least four workers dead," a reporter on the scene said.

The reporter said more than 100 people were wounded, mostly by police gunshots. Some policemen were also injured in attacks by workers armed with stones, sticks and knives.

Some 20 ships were stranded by the strike.

Mongla handles about 20 percent of Bangladesh's exports and imports, while Chittagong port handles the rest.
