Monsoon rains death toll in Nepal rises to 122

August 23, 2000
Web posted at: 11:06 PM HKT (1506 GMT)

KATHMANDU, Nepal (Reuters) -- Landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rains have killed seven more people in central Nepal taking the monsoon season's toll across the Himalayan kingdom since June to 122, an official said on Wednesday.

Home (interior) Ministry official Min Bahadur Poudel Chhetri said seven members of a family in Thulopatan village in Dolakha district died late on Tuesday when their house was swept away.

Floods and landslides are common in Nepal during the annual monsoon season that continues through September.

Officials said the floods had left more than 8,000 families homeless and hundreds have been housed in makeshift shelters and school buildings.

They said the loss to paddy crops, roads, bridges and school buildings due to floods was more than $6.0 million across the country.

They said landslides or floods had damaged part of the highway that linked Kathmandu with Tibet in the north affecting trade and transport for over a week.

More than 1,500 people were killed in floods or landslides in Nepal's worst floods in recent years in 1993.
