First look: 'Dead or Alive 3'

(IDG) -- To show the true power of the Xbox, Microsoft needed a game that would be miles ahead of anything yet scene on the PlayStation 2. It finally got such a title in Dead or Alive 3 from Tecmo.

The tremendous detail in the environments were all the more impressive when you consider just how massive they really were. When GamePro asked how large the fighting areas would be, head of Team Ninja, Tomonobu Itagaki joked several miles. Equally notable were the striking character models, which were definitely powered up from previous incarnations. The most easily recognizable change was in the characters, hair and the movement of their costumes.

Many old favorites will be returning although at this point Itagaki could not confirm if they will all reappear. He would rather incorporate as many new characters as possible, and the DOA3 footage already revealed at least four new fighters (one of whom looks like a new boss character). Speaking of new characters, the single most gratuitous use of processing power was in the form of a female fighter in a Karate gear. Her entire outfit moved and bent as fluidly as real clothing, realistically interacting with her body underneath. The fact that DOA3 is an Xbox exclusive is a major coup, and will leave Tecmo as the sole participant in the Xbox fighting genre this fall.
