Small earthquake, aftershock rumble region north of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A light earthquake rumbled through the region on the northern outskirts of this city near San Fernando at 6:26 p.m. (9:26 p.m. ET) Saturday, according to the California Institute of Technology and U.S. Geological Service Web page.

It said the quake had a preliminary measurement of 4.3, and the "shakemap" on the site listed the temblor as "very light."

It was centered two miles east/northeast of San Fernando. At 6: 51 p.m. (9:51 p.m. ET), another jolt hit the region, this one measuring 4.1.

CNN's Paul Vercammen was in North Hollywood when the quake hit, and he said it was "one of those types where, whatever you are doing you stop, take notice and look skyward to make sure there is nothing falling."

"You don't always hear the quakes here, but this one was audible," he said.

On January 17, 1994, a quake of 6.7 caused heavy damage and casualties in Northridge, California, just west of San Fernando.

No damage or injuries had yet been reported, according to local television reports.
