East, Gulf Coast and Great Lakes wet and stormy
(AP) -- Clouds and rain draped across the East coast early Monday while a low pressure system sliced over the Great Lakes. High pressure built over the Southwest. A weak cold front over the East was expected to push toward the coast, pushing scattered showers and thunderstorms from New England down to the Carolinas and even into portions of Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi. Another storm system was forecast to move into the Great Lakes region by afternoon, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to eastern Wisconsin and Michigan. In between the two systems, the Ohio Valley was predicted to remain clear to partly cloudy. Isolated showers were likely for southern Florida. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected in portions of Arkansas, Louisiana and central and eastern Texas. Flash flooding could become a problem in isolated areas. A cold front trailing from the Great Lakes system into Iowa and northern Missouri could bring some clouds and a slight chance for a few light showers. High pressure building behind the front was forecast to bring clear to partly cloudy skies and dry conditions to the northern Plains and upper Mississippi Valley. A few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms were forecast to spark over eastern Idaho, northeastern Utah and western Wyoming. A storm system moving into western Canada could bring clouds and a few sprinkles to northwestern Washington. Low clouds and fog also were expected to form along the coasts of California and Oregon. Highs Monday were forecast in the 60s and 70s along the Pacific Northwest coast, New England, Great Lakes, northern Plains and parts of Colorado and Wyoming; the 80s across the mid-Atlantic, Midwest, central Plains, New Mexico and Gulf Coast; the 90s along the southern Plains, Montana, Southeast, Utah and Nevada; and 100s across southern California. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a high of 115 degrees in Bullhead City, Arizona, and Needles, California, to a low of 35 degrees in Stanley, Idaho; Leadville, Colorado; and Meacham, Oregon. The Associated Press contributed to this report. |
