'Attack of the Clones:' Our reviewers chime in

(CNN) -- It has been said that the "Star Wars" films are critic-proof.

The most recent addition to the saga, 1999's "The Phantom Menace," was roasted by many but still earned more than $400 million. Even the first one, which opened in 1977, was dismissed at the time by some critics as being an overblown Saturday matinee -- which didn't affect its box office one whit.

Of course, that matinee feeling is one reason why the films are so beloved: They can be wondrous thrill rides that tap into the child in us all. Audiences are fervent in their "Star Wars" fandom, which has helped the franchise gross $1.5 billion in North America alone.
