Ed Lavandera: Shooter may have fired across highway
FALLS CHURCH, Virginia (CNN) -- Local, state and federal agents converged on the scene of the fatal shooting of a woman Monday night as authorities gathered evidence that might link the attack to the spree of sniper shootings in the area. CNN's Ed Lavandera made his way to the shopping center and described what he saw while standing about 100 yards from the Home Depot, where the victim had shopped just before she was shot. LAVANDERA: We can clearly see the crime scene where a white curtain has been put up, extending out from an ambulance, presumably where the body of the shooting victim lies. The parking lot is not an open-air parking lot. There's a second story to the parking area in front of the Home Depot. So this woman was in the middle of the parking lot, standing underneath about a 15-foot clearance under the parking garage. The car is in the middle of that parking garage. The officers here have roped off a massive crime scene area, which pretty much runs the entire length of the Home Depot area, which is probably about 300 to 400 yards. On both sides of the parking lot there is a building and a concrete wall on the left side, if you're looking directly at the Home Depot. So essentially, the only way to look into this parking garage is from directly across the street from Highway 50. Across the street, there is an old school and over there police have roped off that area as well. One officer asked me to stay out of that area because they haven't searched it yet. Essentially there is a grassy knoll area, a parking lot and then the school begins on the other side. And all of that area is roped off by crime tape, and there are officers stationed along that tape. There are a lot of officers on the scene and it appears that they are preparing to perform the same hand-in-hand search -- not only of the parking lot area but also in the area across the street -- that they've done at the scenes of confirmed sniper shootings.
