Two killed in Spanish embassy fire
BRUSSELS, Belgium (CNN) -- A Spanish guard and firefighter have been killed in a fire which swept through the Spanish Embassy in Belgium late on Thursday. A spokesman for the Spanish prime minister's office said the cause of the fire was not immediately known, but initial indications were that an electrical short circuit might be to blame. He did not know the number of people injured or the extent of their injuries, but said others were injured, including firefighters. The guard who died in the blaze was employed by the embassy. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and Foreign Minister Josep Pique -- who are in Monterrey, Mexico, for the International Conference on Financing for Development -- have been informed of the fire, the spokesman said. Spain currently holds the presidency of the European Union. |
