Oprah attends dad's debut

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- This time Oprah Winfrey watched someone else on the screen.

The talk show host and actress attended the Friday night premiere of "Charlie's War" at the Nashville Film Festival. Her father, Vernon, has a role in the independent film.

"I'm excited to see what he can do on the screen," she told reporters as she entered the theater.

Her father is a Nashville barber and former councilman.

Oprah Winfrey grew up and got her start in broadcasting in Nashville.

Wendie Malick's new show

SANTA MONICA, California (AP) -- After seven seasons as the fast-living fashion maven Nina Van Horn on "Just Shoot Me," Wendie Malick is finally getting a chance to show off her maternal side.

Malick's new television pilot, "My Life With Men," features the ex-model as a woman in a house full of males.

"It's a big change for me," Malick told The Associated Press. "I'm living with my four sons, my husband, my father and a male dog that's not fixed. Basically I'm surrounded by testosterone."

Malick will know next week if ABC will add the show to its fall lineup. She also just completed a new film, "Bathroom Boy," in which she plays the mother of a boy who locks himself in a bathroom to do math equations. Her son is played by Justin Long of the NBC series "Ed."

Goodman gets jazzy

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival got an unexpected bit of help from actor John Goodman.

Clarinetist Pete Fountain was playing in one of the jazz tents Sunday afternoon when he pointed out to the crowd that Goodman was in the audience, and he asked Goodman to get up on the stage.

Goodman, wearing a yellow polo shirt and khaki shorts, said, "Pardon me for loitering in front of an orchestra."

Then Goodman began singing "When the Saints Go Marching In," which is a staple in Fountain's repertoire.

Goodman is a member of Fountain's Half-Fast Walking Club, which goes down St. Charles Avenue every year for Mardi Gras.

Goodman, who lives in the New Orleans area, got a big applause and blew a kiss to the audience and band members when he finished.
