YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) -- American Shawn Crawford relegated current and former world champions John Capel and Frankie Fredericks to the minor positions with a blistering 200 meters at the Yokohama meeting in Japan.

Crawford clocked an impressive 20.19 seconds to leave Namibian Fredericks 20.50) and compatriot Capel (20.69) trailing.

World record holder Tim Montgomery was beaten into second in the 100 meters by Obadele Thompson of Barbados.

Thompson got off to a quick start at International Stadium Yokohama on Tuesday and crossed the finish line in 10.20 seconds. The USA's Montgomery was second in 10.32 followed by Japan's Nobuharu Asahara in 10.39.

American Coby Miller was fourth while Australia's Patrick Johnson finished in fifth place.

Montgomery broke the 100-meter world record mark with a time of 9.78 last year, but has failed to re-produce that form this season.

In the men's 110 hurdles, world silver medalist Terrence Trammell of the United States crossed the finish line in 13:52 seconds.

Two-time defending world champion Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic coasted to victory in the 400-meter hurdles, winning in 48.86. American Joey Woody was second in 49.34.

"It wasn't a great time," said Sanchez. "It was cold and a little windy but I'm glad the Japanese fans could come out and enjoy this and I'm glad the season is over."

In the women's 200-meters, American Christe Gaines posted a time of 22.67, well ahead of France's Muriel Hurtis and compatriot Demetria Washington.

"That was a personal best for me," said Gaines. "I was injured at the beginning of the season but I'm running a lot better now and it's great to be here in Japan."

Japan's Koji Murofushi gave the local fans a thrill when he won the men's hammer throw.

Murofushi, who won the bronze medal in Paris, took first place with a heave of 80.44 meters. Ivan Tikhon of Belarus was second with a throw of 77.52 meters.
