Toppmoeller is new Hamburg supremo
HAMBURG, Germany -- SV Hamburg have sacked their Austrian coach Kurt Jara and will unveil former Bayer Leverkusen chief Klaus Toppmoeller as his successor. Media spokesman Marinus Bester confirmed a media report that Jara had been removed from his post with Toppmoeller set for a whirlwind appointment at the AOL-Arena. A 4-0 thrashing by Kaiserslautern at the weekend was the final straw for Hamburg following the shock elimination by Ukraine side Dniepropetrovsk in the first round of the the UEFA Cup. Jara, 53, targeted the Champions League at the start of the season after finishing a creditable fourth last term. And expectations were raised further when Hamburg lifted the German League Cup with a 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund. Since then things have gone awry for the seven-time German champions with 19 goals conceded in nine Bundesliga matches as Hamburg slumped to 13th in the German top-flight. Jara was thought to have one more game to save his job but the Hamburg hierarchy lost patience and have turned to Toppmoeller ahead of Saturday's match with Schalke 04. Toppmoeller, 52, guided Leverkusen to the 2002 Champions League final but has been out of management since the club dispensed with his services in February 2003. The former VfL Bochum coach is to be handed a contract until 2006 and officially unveiled on Thursday.
