WATKINSVILLE, Georgia (CNN) -- A nationwide alert issued Friday for a missing baby with a potentially fatal kidney disorder, has been lifted after 6-month-old Desiree Sayles turned up at an Atlanta hospital later in the day, according to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.
The baby is believed to have been spirited away by her mother, who apparently did not want to give the child up to court-ordered state custody, officials said.
The mother, Christina Sayles, is not in police custody and her whereabouts are unclear, a dispatcher for the sheriff's office said.
The baby was checked into Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta, the dispatcher said. A hospital spokeswoman could not release Desiree's status or condition, citing new rules protecting patient information.
