(CNN) -- A man drove a car through a double security fence at San Diego's main airport Wednesday, then jumped out of the moving vehicle before it crossed an active runway and crashed into another fence, airport officials said.

The bizarre incident happened around 4:10 p.m. (7:10 p.m. ET) at San Diego International Airport-Lindbergh Field .

The suspect was identified as Omar Ceballos, 23, of Imperial Beach, California. He faces local charges of vandalism, driving while under the influence of a controlled substance, hit and run, and unauthorized entry to an air field.

He is being held in a local jail and has been questioned by the FBI.

Officials have not determined his motivation. Airport Authority spokeswoman Diana Lucero said the investigation into the security breach will continue.

She told CNN the suspect drove a late model Ford Mustang through two perimeter security fences, and then onto the airport tarmac.

Lucero said the man bailed out of the moving car before running back under the fences. He was captured without incident moments later by Marines stationed as guards at the nearby U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Depot.

The car continued without Ceballos, moving at a slow rate of speed across the tarmac, crossing the airport's only runway before running into a fence on the far side of the field.

"There were no aircraft in the area when this occurred," Lucero said.

She said no one was endangered by the incident, and no planes taking off or landing had to be diverted.

Lucero said the airport followed procedures after the breach, and a canine unit checked the car to make sure there were no explosives in it. No weapons or explosives were found.
