Algerians held in UK terror swoop

Story Tools

LONDON, England -- Ten Algerian men have been arrested under Britain's anti-terror laws, police say.

Six were held in London and four in Manchester in co-ordinated dawn raids. A London police spokesman said: "This operation is part of our extensive and on-going inquiries into terrorism."

Six men were held in north, east and south-east London by officers from Scotland Yard's Anti-Terrorist Branch.

The detained men were all believed to be aged in their 30s.

They were held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 on suspicion of being involved in the "commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism."

All six were taken to a police station in central London and remain in custody.

In Manchester a 32-year-old man was also held under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

The operation was carried out by Greater Manchester Police at the request of the Anti-Terrorist Branch.

He will be transferred to London for questioning.

Three others were also held under the Terrorism Act in the Manchester raid.
