Magee injured after street assault
BELFAST, Northern Ireland -- Boxer Eamonn Magee sustained a broken leg and suspected punctured lung after he was attacked by a gang with pickaxe handles, his trainer has said.
Magee, who holds the lightly regarded WBU world welterweight title, was attacked on the outskirts of Belfast on Sunday night after a gang stopped the car in which he was a passenger.
Magee had surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital and is in a stable condition.
Magee, who won the WBU title last year, was training for a fight with former WBA champion Sharmba Mitchell next month but his injuries could now force him to quit the sport.
"It is very hard for a young person to recover after getting a leg broken in two places," trainer John Breen said. "Eamonn is 32 years old. We will just have to wait and see.
"He seemed to be on the way to some very big fights but now you just wonder what the future will hold."
