LISBON, Portugal (Reuters) -- United States international goalkeeper Zach Thornton has signed a six-month contract with Portuguese side Benfica.

He will replace Benfica's number two keeper, Argentine Carlos Bossio, who has been sidelined with an injured left shoulder.

Thornton, 30, played for reigning North American champions Chicago Fire from 1998 to 2003.

He will be officially presented by the club on Wednesday.
