The bomber was killed and four others were injured.
Police said the bomber walked into the mosque and detonated the explosives while people were at prayer.
Police believe there were few injuries because of a technical malfunction with the explosives.
Rawalpindi is near the capital of Islamabad.
The bombing took place Saturday night during a mourning period for Shiites, who are marking the month of Muharram. The most important day of the month is Ashura, which falls on March 2.
During Muharram, Shiite Muslims recall the seventh-century death of Hussein, grandson of Islam's prophet, Muhammad.
A claim of responsibility has not yet been made.
