(CNN) -- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck just off Colombia's Pacific coast late Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.
Power outages were reported in at least three cities in the area, but there was no sign of widespread damage, Colombian authorities reported.
The epicenter of the quake about 295 miles (480 kilometers) west-southwest of Bogota and about 220 miles north of Quito, the capital of neighboring Ecuador, according to the USGS. It hit at 8:49 p.m. (0149 GMT), the agency reported.
The region has been hard-hit by earthquakes in the past. In January 1999, a magnitude 6 quake killed nearly 900 people and left 200,000 homeless in western Colombia -- and as recently as mid-August, a magnitude 8.0 quake killed more than 500 people in neighboring Peru. E-mail to a friend
