Notables Help Clinton Celebrate His 51st Birthday

Wasting away on Martha's Vineyard with Jimmy Buffett

EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AllPolitics, Aug. 20) -- A raft of notables, including singer Jimmy Buffett and author William Styron, helped President Bill Clinton celebrate his 51st birthday at a low-key party on Martha's Vineyard.

Clinton, on vacation, motorcaded to the home of TV stars Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson Tuesday night for the birthday bash, after a day of relaxation and a walk-jog with daughter Chelsea.

The White House didn't publicize the guest list, but attendees included lobbyist and presidential golf partner Vernon Jordan, who arrived in a spiffy red convertible, singer Carly Simon, TV mogul Merv Griffin and former Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham. Simon sang a duet with the sister of ex-husband James Taylor, and Buffett sang his signature tune, "Margaritaville." househ

About 75 people danced the night away -- or at least until shortly after midnight -- in a tent outside the home. Clinton danced with Mrs. Clinton and also with Steenburgen.

Guests feasted on a traditional New England clambake and a vanilla sponge cake shaped like a lighthouse, filled with raspberries and strawberries.

Earlier in the day, Clinton said he felt good on his birthday. "So I feel very blessed, and I'm very fortunate to be here," he said. "And as far as I know, I'm in good health, and the country's doing well. That's the most important thing of all."

The party was in marked contrast to Clinton's birthday party last year at New York's Radio City Music Hall, which he turned into a $10 million fund-raiser for the Democratic Party.

Today, Clinton may go boating and there are rumors that golfer Tiger Woods might drop in later in the week to play a round with the president.

CNN's John King contributed to this report.
