Gov. Ridge wins big in Pennsylvania
(AllPolitics, November 3) -- Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge easily won another term in office Tuesday, earning broad-based support from both men and women and across all age groups.
Ridge managed to split the union vote with Democratic challenger Ivan Itkin, and handily carried non-union households.
Third party candidate Peg Luksik garnered 10 percent of the vote this time,
compared with 2 percent in 1994.
Ridge also had an edge because his party controls the Legislature. And during his previous term, the economy generated a $1 billion tax surplus.
Ridge is an experienced politician, having served 12 years in the U.S. House of Representatives before being elected governor in 1994. His name is also being mentioned as a possible candidate for vice president in the year 2000.
