WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, February 4) -- White House Counsel Charles Ruff formally responded Thursday to the latest invitation from Senate Republicans for President Bill Clinton himself to be deposed. The text, refusing the offer, is below:
Dear Senator Lott:
I write in response to the letter sent to the President on February, 3,
1999, by you and twenty-seven other Senators, requesting that he submit to a
deposition.
It is neither necessary nor appropriate for the President to testify. The
record before the Senate is more than sufficient to permit it to move to a fair
and expeditious conclusion of these proceedings on the schedule already agreed
to. We urge you to do so.
Sincerely,
Charles F.C. Ruff
Counsel to the President.
