Meat recall list expands

foods
Listeria is most commonly found in processed meats such as deli meats and hot dogs, as well as in soft cheeses, raw meat and unpasteurized milk

Products made by Bil Mar and Thorn Apple Valley

In this story:

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Two meat processing plants that already have recalled some products possibly contaminated with the sometimes fatal Listeria bacteria have expanded their recall lists.

The Agriculture Department said Thursday that Bil Mar Foods has added more brands to its December 22 recall of hot dogs and luncheon meats made over a six-month period at its plant in Zeeland, Michigan.

Since then, three more companies announced that they are recalling meat after the bacteria was found in their products.

One of them, Thorn Apple Valley, has now provided updated information about the brand names under which it sells its products, made from July 1998 to December 1998 at its processing plant in Forrest City, Arkansas.

Potentially deadly bacteria

Listeriosis, a condition caused by deadly Listeria bacteria, causes no more than flu-like symptoms for most healthy people. But it can kill, by causing meningitis or blood infection. Most at risk are pregnant women, the elderly and people with weak immune systems.

Consumer tips from the USDA
  • Do not eat products from the two plants.
  • Anyone concerned about illnesses they suspect are related to these products should contact their physicians immediately.
  • Contact Bil Mar (1-800-247-8339).
  • Contact Thorn Apple Valley (1-800-839-2427).
  • Food safety questions: USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline (1-800-535-4555).
  • Meat and poultry recall information on the Web
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported earlier this week that the death toll from tainted meat linked to Bil Mar's Michigan plant has risen to 12. No illnesses have been linked to the Thorn Apple Valley products.

Last week Bosell Foods, Inc., of Cleveland recalled 350 pounds of sliced ham. No illnesses were reported.

Earlier this month, Oscar Mayer Foods voluntarily recalled two types of luncheon meat after an elderly man in Kansas City, Missouri, became sick after eating the company's deli meat.

Government officials said there was no evidence that the four cases are linked.

    Recall information for Bil Mar

Bil Mar, a division of Chicago-based Sara Lee Corp., says the company expects to retrieve 15 million pounds of meat. A Sara Lee spokeswoman denied a report that the recall would be as large as 35 million pounds, which would have made it the largest meat recall in U.S. history.

The added Bil Mar products were not believed to have been sold at retail at the time of the original recall. All products are identified by the Bil Mar establishment codes of "EST 6911" or "P-261."
