(CNN) -- Cancer researchers will enter the new century with high hopes for more effecive treatments for breast cancer. Once a terrifying and deadly diagnosis, in the new millennium breast cancer may become a manageable condition, thanks to the work of women's advocates over the past 25 years.

Several of those crusading individuals are featured in "Voices of the Millennium," including actress Patricia Ireland and former first lady Betty Ford. And a former U.S. representative from Colorado, Pat Schroeder, explains the dismal state of breast cancer research when she first turned her sights on the National Institutes of Health.
