HOLLYWOOD, California (CNN) -- If you've seen the popular James Gurney book "Dinotopia," then the exotic island featured in the new "Dinotopia" CD-ROM game is familiar territory. This game's challenging, yet gentle, play lays waste the notion that all interesting CD-ROM games require skill in the handling of automatic weapons or creative use of chainsaws.

Dinotopia game

The CD-ROM version of "Dinotopia," from Turner Interactive, casts the player as a shipwrecked explorer seeking a lost twin sister amid the population of the lost island, which is made up both of humorous humans and humane, intelligent dinosaurs who challenge you to games of chance and logic. There are 130 animated and live-action characters incorporated into the game. (153K AIFF sound or 153K WAV sound)

Enthusiasts looking for a new "Doom" or "Descent" will probably give it a pass. However, its apt combination of intellect and humanity makes the game a winner for new players looking for something to share with the family.
