"Twister" has struck in Australia. Daily Variety says the film set a record on its opening weekend in 229 theaters by taking in the Australian equivalent of $3.8 million. It got a thumbs up by 83 percent of the movie-goers.
Robert Redford's film "The Horse Whisperer" has been delayed. The movie was scheduled to begin shooting in July, but it will be 1997 before principal photography can begin, according to Daily Variety. Redford may do another film in the interim.
William Shatner is leaving the perils of space behind to do a little ice-skating. According to Hollywood Reporter, Shatner will star in "My Three Hockey Players." It tells the story of Canadian hockey hero Gordie Howe, who came out of retirement to play with his two sons for the championship Houston Aereos in 1974. When asked if Shatner can handle the physical requirements of the role, the actor's manager replied, "All Canadians can skate."
Actor Greg Kinnear has finished his latest film, "Dear God." The Paramount Pictures film directed by Garry Marshall is about a con artist working in a post office who begins answering letters addressed to the Supreme Being.
A campaign has begun to save the drama "Nowhere Man." The United Paramount network show has been canceled, but fans are using the Internet to attempt to rescue the espionage series.
Actor John Corbett, known for his role as disc jockey Chris Stevens in "Northern Exposure," has moved on to a grittier role. Corbett has been cast in "The Morrison Murders" for USA Network. Daily Variety says Corbett will play a man who discovers that his brother murdered their parents. The film will air later this year.
From the computer screen to the big screen. The CD-ROM game "Spycraft" is going to be a movie. Universal Studios has acquired the rights to the computer game with plans for a feature film.
"The Birdcage" still soars over the competition in international ticket sales. The film is No. 1 in Germany, Brazil and Hong Kong. In Italy and Spain, "Primal Fear" is tops. Japanese audiences are lining up for "Heat." And in the United Kingdom, "From Dusk til Dawn" is the top draw.
Grandpa is a Rolling Stone. Guitarist Keith Richards has become a grandfather. His son, Marlon, and his wife, Lucie, are new parents to Ella Rose Richards, born last week.
