50,000,000 hits can't be wrong20 years after his death, Elvis is King of the WebFrom CNN Interactive Writer Andy Walton Elvis has left the building for good, but twenty years after his death, The King is alive and well on the World Wide Web. If you've ever had a hankerin' -- and, let's face it, who hasn't? -- to climb into a white satin jumpsuit, scarf a couple of fried banana sandwiches, and try a few karate kicks, the Web might provide just the right outlet. One that won't worry your friends and neighbors quite so much, at least. Graceland onlineThe official page of Elvis Presley Enterprises is a good starting point. It contains information on official events and tours, and, under the heading "Elvisology," a wealth of Elvis trivia, stats, and a brief biography. And, of course, merchandise. Speaking of merchandise, Virtual Graceland offers a look into Elvis' life, and into his famous Memphis mansion -- including parts of the house not on the public tour. The page also promises home movies and concert footage on the two CD tour. "The Original (Unofficial) Elvis Home Page" has been on the Web for nearly three years, which practically makes it a historic site in Web terms. Elvis Presley Enterprises is a stickler for copyrights, and after a widely publicized "cease and desist" letter in 1994, the unofficial page is light on pictures. But it still has a broad variety of text links, including the full text of Elvis' last will and testament. The sincerest form of flattery? For some Elvis fans, remembering the King is a year-round activity. The National Association of Amateur Elvis Impersonators offers free memberships to devotees of the King, and is presided over by the former Ronald Sklar, a San Francisco street performer. The president and webmaster of the organization, according to his website bio, legally changed his name to Nude Elvis in 1993. The Big Elvis page has a list of Elvis impersonators, amateur and professional. But for the ultimate Las Vegas experience, you don't have to simply listen from the audience; "An Elvis Wedding" offers an Elvis wannabe who gives the bride away, sings, and presides over the ceremony. The chapel can even be booked from the page. Ah, but if you believe that too much is never enough (and if you've read this far, you know who you are), "Why settle for just one Elvis look alike?" That's part of the sales pitch for the Flying Elvi, a ten-man troupe of jumpsuited, sideburned Presley wannabes who, according to their page, "make excellent groomsmen." Oh, and they jump out of airplanes. That's right. The Flying Elvi are a skydiving team, in full Elvis regalia. Best known for an appearance in the movie "Honeymoon in Vegas," they, too, can be hired from their page. Hopefully, the e-mail will make it through; the page includes Elvis' "Return to Sender" as background music. |
