Des'ree's 'Gotta Be' high on new album

TORONTO, Canada (CNN) -- Few might suspect that Des'ree had once described herself as a camera-shy young girl when catapulted into fame with her single "You Gotta Be." But this artist is more than just a one-hit wonder. Her latest album, "Supernatural," takes in the musical scenery from around the world, drawing on influences including funk, folk, reggae and soul.

"I'm really proud of 'Supernatural,' because it took me two years to make and it was a very turbulent two years, I would say. I worked with some great musicians and some great producers and some great studios, but there were times when creatively I was on a very different page from my record company," she says. "They were expecting one thing from me and I was maybe delivering another."

After finishing a lengthy world tour for her first album, she says she'd grown a lot through exposure to other musicians. Returning to the studio, "I was very excited about the new, improved me," she says. "So I wanted to experiment with these different sounds and textures and ideas.

"It took a while for me to really bring the flavors together."

World Beat's Aashna Patel chatted with the singer about her full-speed-ahead career, and the motivations behind her new songs.
