Family members hold private memorial for HartmansWeb posted on: Friday, June 05, 1998 4:22:21 PM GLENDALE, California (CNN) -- Family members held a private memorial service for Phil and Brynn Hartman Thursday, a week after Mrs. Hartman shot her husband and then herself in the couple's Encino home. The Hartmans' orphaned children, 9-year-old Sean Edward and 6-year-old Birgen Anika, were among those gathered at the Church of the Recessional at Forest Lawn Memorial Park for the morning services. Family spokesman Stan Rosenfield would not disclose details about the private ceremony. News cameras were kept well away from the church, though a helicopter hovered overhead during part of the ceremony.
Police have determined that Brynn Hartman shot the former star of "Saturday Night Live" and "NewsRadio" to death while he slept, and later killed herself as officers removed the children from the house. Both Hartmans were cremated. Family members are expected to scatter the ashes at Santa Catalina Island's Emerald Bay, as Phil Hartman requested in his will. The two children will go to live with Brynn Hartman's sister and her husband in Wisconsin. Hartman publicist Stan Rosenfield said that the family would "release the names of charities that people can make donations to" at a later date. Reuters contributed to this report.
