Concluding his nine-day trip to China in July 1998, President Clinton called it "a remarkably successful attempt to continue to build our partnership for the future."

The U.S. president walked a tightrope of diplomacy during the trip, attempting to strengthen political and economic ties with Beijing even as he called attention to perceived shortcomings in the areas of human rights and democratic freedoms.

While some critics are unlikely to be impressed with the visit to China, Clinton's aides say he was right to go, and they predict the visit will eventually pay huge dividends for both the United States and China.
