(CNN) -- With a rash of fuchsias, tangerines and lemon-y yellows, Ralph Lauren colored the runway in New York as Fashion Week reached midpoint.

Both cheerful primary brights and strong pastels were showcased Wednesday in lean monochromatic outfits, many cozy and casual with relaxed turtlenecks and felted pants and skirts.

"It's the kind of clothes that mothers and daughters can wear, in terms of concept," Lauren said. "It's not about age. It's about taste, and it's about lifestyle. I believe women of all ages can wear anything."

The sporty looks of fall seen in other shows from Donna Karan to Oscar de la Renta continued with Lauren in down vests, parkas and drawstring waists.

"It's sport utility done in a dressed-up way," said Lauren who matched his weekend-wear with satin and sequins.

Both Lauren and New York designer Michael Kors warmed up to cashmere and felted fabrics.

Kors, following a spring of summer camp-inspired style, presented a look that was cabin-cozy and cowgirl cool with blanket skirts, fishing vests, pullovers and jackets; His autumn colors earthy and muted

At Ellen Tracy, the collection was calm, with casual, but classic clothes.

The show, held in Grand Central Station, comes just a month before the design house's 50th anniversary.

It featured simple separates including soft tailored jackets, cashmere sweaters, satin camisoles and mid-knee flannel skirts.

"More and more I talk to women, and comfort is such a factor," said Linda Allard, head designer for Ellen Tracy. "Women today have 'been there' with the corporate suit, and we don't need to be so structured anymore. It's about being comfortable, but looking polished."
