America Online starts Digital City New York
January 30, 1998
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- America Online Inc.'s AOL Studios said
Thursday it has launched Digital City New York, a local
Internet guide that will rival similar offerings by Microsoft
Corp. and privately held CitySearch.
Digital City New York provides news, sports, weather,
traffic, tourist data, entertainment and other information on
New York. It is available both to Internet users and AOL
members.
It has seven departments ranging from News and Sports to
Movies, Dining and Citywise, a source for urban survival
tools, and provides information and commentary on local
events, school board elections, subway maps to street fairs.
Digital City will also serve as a distribution vehicle for
AOL Studios' brands and increases the advertising potential
of these brands by offering them local play, the company
said.
Digital City is now available for a total of 32 cities, the
company said.
It rivals Microsoft's Sidewalk service, which offers local
arts and entertainment online guides for 10 cities, and
CitySearch.
