Video, audio to enhance e-mail messages
(IDG) -- Taiwan's CyberLink will introduce a new version of its VideoLive Mail software that allows Windows 95/98 users to record and embed compressed video and audio files in e-mail messages at next week's Comdex/Fall show in Las Vegas. With VideoLive Mail Plus 3.0, users can record messages through a camera and/or microphone and insert those messages into an e-mail. The software automatically embeds an executable decoder in the attached file that allows the recipient to view or listen to the message without having to install any software, CyberLink officials said. CyberLink's software kernel features video and audio compression technology that allows the files to be compressed to a 1-900 ratio, making it easier and faster to transfer the files over the Internet, officials added.
VideoLive Mail is fully compatible with popular e-mail applications such as Microsoft's Exchange and Outlook, and Qualcomm's Eudora. The software features a new graphical user interface that simulates a camcorder. Other new features include the Setup Wizard that helps users properly configure their hardware devices, and a Mail Wizard that teaches first-time users to create, save, and send video mail files, officials said. Both retail and bundling versions of VideoLive Mail Plus 3.0 will start shipping this month in English and German, and traditional Chinese and Japanese language editions. French and Spanish versions will also be released soon, officials said. The retail version, which in Taiwan will sell for $40, also includes a multimedia album for easy search and retrieval of images and video clips, as well as the Greeting Card Wizard, which comes with more than 250 templates for creating personalized cards. CyberLink will also show off at Comdex the latest version of its CDWizard playback software for audio and video. CDWizard 3.0 supports playback of a broad range of video file formats, including AVI, MOV, MPG and DAT, as well as VOB, M2V, AC3, and audio files such as WAV and MID. The retail version of CDWizard will also ship later this month. Pricing was unavailable. CyberLink Corp., in Hsintien, Taiwan, can be reached at www.cyberlink.com.tw.
