PLETTENBURG BAY, South Africa (CNN) -- The world's first multi-species primate sanctuary has opened in South Africa,
promising hope for thousands of neglected animals from across
the African continent.
Set on about 200 acres of forest land in the southeastern
part of the country, Monkeyland is designed as a
rehabilitation center for abused monkeys, but it is also
expected to become a tourist draw.
The 80 primates there include some rare species and animals
liberated from zoos. Once acclimated to their new
surroundings, they can roam freely through the preserve.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
