CNN 20: Nancy Kerrigan Attack, January 6, 1994

Aired January 6, 2000 - 9:19 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: CNN is celebrating 20 years of bringing news to the world this year, and we're marking the occasion with a look back.

Today, the big story on January 6, 1994.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

NICK CHARLES, CNN SR. SPORTS CORRESPONDENT: I remember coming in to the office and thinking this is one of the most ghastly things I'd ever seen in sports.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

NANCY KERRIGAN, FIGURE SKATER: When I went through the curtain for some reason I must have heard something behind me, I turned around, and when I was turning I saw -- just someone running by me and he just like whacked me with this long black stick.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CHARLES: I just remember that cry "Why me," as soon as she was hit on the knee. It struck me. It was literally -- really was an emotional blow, I think, for everybody.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BRENDA KERRIGAN, MOTHER: I can't believe that one human being would deliberately hurt her.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CHARLES: And as the tale began to unfold, it just got ghastlier by the minute.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BOBBIE BATTISTA, CNN ANCHOR: Harding bodyguard Shawn Eric Eckardt told investigators that he and Harding's husband setup last Thursday's attack on Kerrigan.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) TONYA HARDING, FIGURE SKATER: I don't know for sure anything about what's going on at all, you know, of course I am going to cooperate. I mean, I don't have anything to hide. I want the person to be caught as much as anybody else does.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CHARLES: I have to say this event was unprecedented in terms of shattering the ideal of sportsmanship. They went way off the deep-end in this one.
