Automakers Show Off Their Newest Wonders on Wheels at the North American International Auto Show

Aired January 12, 2000 - 9:56 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: They are sleek, powerful, and they could be coming soon to a garage near you.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Automakers showing off their newest wonders on wheels at the North American International Auto Show.

For more on this, CNN's Ed Garsten has our ticket to ride

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ED GARSTEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): A supercharged Spyder is revealed on the auto show floor, and Ford shows off a means of escape.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Ford Escape: fun and adventure written all over it.

GARSTEN: Just some of the new but conventionally-powered vehicles introduced at the North American International Auto Show. Then there's GM's precept fuel-cell vehicle, a vision of what could- be, a car that goes and goes and goes between fill-ups of hydrogen, the equivalent of 108 miles a gallon.

JACK SMITH, CEO, GENERAL MOTORS: The technology, you know, needs further development, but clearly moving to the hydrogen world is where the focus is, as we speak.

GARSTEN: Fuel cells convert hydrogen to electricity, which powers the car. The only emission is water vapor.

With its experimental RX-Evolve, Mazda toys with resurrecting an engine of the past: the rotary, made popular by the legendary RX-7. It's been updated to run more efficiently and more cleanly.

KEI KADO, MAZDA: By greatly reducing all three major pollutants in exhaust gas.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Experience this!

GARSTEN: It's DaimlerChrysler's new PT-Cruiser. Last year a version of it was presented as a concept car. Now, the little four- wheeler company executive Robert Eaton called "too cool to categorize" is already a hit, and it hasn't even gone on sale yet. ROBERT EATON, CEO, DAIMLERCHRYSLER: Over 250,000 people have been writing in, saying: When can I get one? I want one right now, et cetera. So, yeah, it's going to be real popular.

GARSTEN: The '40s throwback will cruise into showrooms in the spring starting at $16,000. But with the introduction of these new, little four wheelers, DaimlerChrysler proved that a promise to produce a consumer version of the PT-Cruiser, it wasn't blowing smoke.

Ed Garsten, CNN, Detroit.
