Boston, Cape Cod Feel Bitter-Cold Temperatures and Sharp Winds

Aired January 21, 2000 - 9:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Boston is also bracing for bitterly- cold temperatures. Tonight, the mercury is expected to dip to near zero, but the wind could make it feel a lot colder than that.

CNN's Frank Buckley joins us live. He is outside in Boston, all bundled up, to bring us the latest on conditions there.

Good morning, Frank.

FRANK BUCKLEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Daryn.

The snow itself isn't that bad, this morning, here in Boston. It is, in fact, the wind and the wind that is to come or is expected to come throughout the day. Let me give you a sense of what it looks like here in downtown Boston, just looking down through one of the sidewalks. You can see the is snow not falling in any significant amount right now, but there is some snow on the ground.

The problem is with the cold. Right now it is about 13 degrees Fahrenheit here in Boston, but with the wind chill factor it is believed to be about eight degrees below zero in terms of how cold it feels. This pales in comparison, however, to the Cape Cod area, where conditions are blizzard-like conditions, last night and through this morning, where the temperatures are expected to drop down to 40 degrees below zero, today, with the wind chill factor factored in. Very low visibility there along Cape Cod. Very cold in the Cape Cod area, today.

Here in Boston, we can tell you that we have people like Timothy Caldwell (ph), here.

You've bundled up. Tell me how you keep warm on a cold day like this?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, this is a down jacket, it is a ski jacket, so it really keeps me very warm, you know, and thermal gloves and thermal hat and, you know, that's about it, you know. I'm from New York, so I'm pretty much used to this kind of weather.

BUCKLEY: So it's -- from New York, you're up here in Massachusetts, it's nothing to you then.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's no big deal at all. I think we're pretty lucky considering the good weather we've had up until you know, December. So, this is nothing in comparison. A little cold, but, you know, you learn to deal with it.

BUCKLEY: Great. Thanks very much, Timothy Caldwell. I appreciate that.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Thank you.

BUCKLEY: We should tell you that in fact today the -- there are some delays at Boston's Logan Airport. Travelers through that airport should expect delays of one to four hours. We know that some of the shuttles are taking off pretty close to on time, but then you might get delayed on the tarmac because of other delays at other airports. So, it is cold and expect to get only colder here in Boston, today.

Frank Buckley, CNN, reporting live from Boston.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: All right, Frank, stay warm there if you can.
