Would-Be Passengers Wait as Raleigh-Durham Airport Tries to Open

Aired January 27, 2000 - 9:03 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: The fallout continues from the last storm that passed through the southeast. Hundreds of passengers stranded in Raleigh, North Carolina, by this week's record snowfall may finally be able to leave today.

For the latest from that hard-hit -- hard-hit city, we bring in Ericka Lewis, who is with our affiliate WRAL.

Ericka, good morning.

ERICKA LEWIS, WRAL REPORTER: Good morning.

You know, Raleigh-Durham International Airport has been closed for the past two days. Now we're hearing that the soonest that the airport could reopen is between noon and 1:00, today, and that time has already been changed several times this morning. But you can bet when the airport does finally reopen many of those stranded passengers will be ready to go.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(voice-over): If the airport is closed, it's not stopping passengers from showing up. Some people arrived early only to find out they'd have to wait. Others have known for a while they would be delayed. Despite the inconvenience, some say they understand the airport's predicament.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It's understandable. Look at the weather, you know. They're doing all the best they can. I've been watching the news, and they've been working 24 hours on the runways. And so you can only do what you can. So, we'll get out on time, I bet.

LEWIS: Others passengers are just frustrated, frustrated with the weather and all of the problems that come with it.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: If they don't open and they cancel my flight, I'm going to have to drive back to Fayetteville.

LEWIS (on camera): How do you feel about that?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Not very happy. I've been driving since 2:00 in the morning right now.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

LEWIS: Now, even if it airport does reopen, there is no guarantee any flights will be coming or going. Several airlines have already canceled all of their flights for the rest of the day, and that's because they're having a problem just getting their crews into the airport because the road conditions here are still very bad.

I'm Ericka Lewis, reporting from Raleigh.
