Morning NewsIcy Forecast Cancels Many Flights Into and Out of Atlanta's Hartsfield AirportAired January 28, 2000 - 9:05 a.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Here in Atlanta, officials are worried that the icy forecast could put a damper on this weekend's Super Bowl. Fans of the Tennessee Titans and the St. Louis Rams, along with thousands of tourists are expected to flock to the city for one of the biggest events in professional sports. The weather is already affecting Sunday's showdown. The Rams and the Titans have been given permission to practice indoors for the game. Super Bowl fans planning to fly into Atlanta may need to double- check those travel plans. Delta Airlines already has canceled about half of its daytime flights into and out of Atlanta today. For the latest on the conditions at this hour, CNN's Brian Cabell joins us. he is at Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport. Brian, probably one of the least crowded day you've ever seen down at the airport. BRIAN CABELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: As a matter of fact, you're right. It is not nearly as crowded as it normally would be on a Friday morning. No snow, so far, Daryn, and we have been looking around the skies for the last couple of hours, not a single snow flake. In fact, we see some blue skies, we see some sun, but it is getting very cold. But as you indicated, some massive problems with the airlines. Delta has canceled about 300 out of 650 flights into and out of Hartsfield International airport today. They say they don't want to see any of their travelers stranded in various airports or in Atlanta, where of course the Super Bowl is being held. Speaking of stranded, travelers we have one of them with us right now. Rhonda Harrison from Monroe, Louisiana. What happened to your flight? RHONDA HARRISON, AIRLINE PASSENGER: Flying out of Orlando yesterday, my airport in Monroe had been closed, and I wanted to take my chances, and get here to Atlanta, get closer to home. And Delta was very nice to put me up in a hotel. And I'm scheduled to flight out today at 11:00. CABELL: Have they said anything further about 11:00 because they are canceling a lot of flights throughout the south? HARRISON: It's still open. So hopefully, I will get to Monroe today. CABELL: What about snow in Monroe. Have you heard anything about that? HARRISON: Very light snow, but more ice. CABELL: But you're taking this all very well so far? HARRISON: It's just the way it is. You can't fool with mother nature. CABELL: Thank you very much. Once again, Rhonda Harrison, a stranded traveler, but doing quite well. She has got a couple hours before her flight takes off. The snow is coming in from the west. It was pouring inches, several inches in Mississippi, as you saw, and Arkansas. Alabama, it is now coming into the western part of Georgia -- Carolton (ph), Georgia -- one or two inches. Some of it is on the roadways, creating a few problems, but nothing terribly serious so far. The weekend here in Atlanta, it will be the problem, we're told, of course as you have heard from the meteorologist, there will be some ice tomorrow, there will be some snow, some sleet perhaps, and then on Sunday, the Super Bowl creating problems for travelers trying to get into Atlanta. But so far, nothing terribly serious, Daryn, all we have is cold weather and some wind. Back to you. KAGAN: All right, well, you stay warm out there. Thank you, Brian.
