CNN 20: Groundhog Day, February 2

Aired February 2, 2000 - 10:24 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Speaking of groundhogs, here's today's "CNN 20."

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEANNE MOOS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): If you think Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, is ground zero for Groundhog Day.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There he is, ladies and gentlemen.

MOOS: Well, there are some who think Punxsutawney Phil is groundhoging the limelight.

KAREN MAGINNIS, WEATHER ANCHOR: Essentially, I think what Groundhog Day means to most people is that, oh, we made it this far through winter, we don't have that much further to go.

MOOS (on camera): What do you predict is going to happen?

UNIDENTIFIED GIRL: He's going to see his shadow.

UNIDENTIFIED GIRL: And if he sees his shadow it means 10 more -- six more days...

UNIDENTIFIED GIRL: Weeks!

UNIDENTIFIED GIRL: Six more weeks.

UNIDENTIFIED GIRL: ... six more weeks of winter.

MAGINNIS: I'm not sure why a groundhog was chosen. That wouldn't be my animal of choice.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Speaking groundhogese to Phil. It's a learned, past-on-generation-to-generation language.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: By George, I think we have a forecast.

(CHEERING)

Like little Jack Horner, spring is just around the corner.

(CHEERING)

UNIDENTIFIED CORRESPONDENT: Hey! It's an early spring, guys. You heard it live here from (OFF-MIKE). The crowd loves it.

MOOS: The one thing that is beyond a shadow of a doubt is that Groundhog Day has nothing to do with science, and this Phil didn't see his shadow, he saw his reflection. No wonder he fled.

MAGINNIS: It is a time when people can say, we have gotten through winter this far, we can make it a few weeks longer.
