John Rocker to Testify in Second Day of MLB Appeals Hearing

Aired February 10, 2000 - 9:24 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Now to New York, where it is day two of a hearing on John Rocker's future. The Atlanta Braves pitcher is appealing his suspension for making derogatory remarks about gays, minorities and immigrants. Yesterday, an arbitrator heard from baseball's commissioner. Today, Rocker himself may get a chance to testify.

For more, let's go to our Deborah Feyerick, who joins us live from Major League Baseball headquarters in New York.

Deborah, good morning.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, good morning, Daryn.

The police barricades are back up in place outside Major League Baseball headquarters. Several signs remain in office windows, including one that says "Adios, Rocker." All of this for day two of arbitration hearings. John Rocker is appealing his two-month suspension.

Yesterday, management defended it's decision, one of the severest of its kind. The baseball commissioner, Bud Selig, says John Rocker has every right to appeal, however Selig is standing by his decision.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BUD SELIG, MLB COMMISSIONER: I did what I thought I had to do what was right, and that's, as far as I -- you know, I'm very comfortable in this position.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

FEYERICK: Lawyers for the Players Union left the building yesterday. They say they don't comment during arbitration hearings. In attendance at these hearings, several community leaders from Atlanta who say the fact Rocker is appealing the suspension shows that he doesn't understand the impact that his words had had on Major League Baseball and on the nation as a whole.

Now, as for the arbitrator, well, this is his first official Major League Baseball hearing. He has 10 days in which to rule, that decision to coincide with the opening day of spring training.

Reporting live, Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New York. KAGAN: Deborah, thank you very much.
