Police Seeking Suspect in Connection With Wall Street Bombing

Aired February 11, 2000 - 10:00 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We're following a story that's been developing this morning in the nerve center of the world's financial markets. Authorities say that a homemade bomb exploded about five hours ago on Wall Street. One person was injured and the ground floor windows in two buildings were blown out. Now police are searching for the suspect.

CNN's Deborah Feyerick joins us with the latest.

Deborah, good morning.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, good morning, Daryn.

We are about three blocks from the New York Stock Exchange, standing on Wall Street. Members of the police crime scene unit have marked off several pieces of what they're calling a homemade explosive device. Now, this was powerful enough to shatter the front windows -- these are very thick windows, and there's a trail of glass leading from the building all the way into the street.

The Joint Terrorist Task Force is here. They're the ones who are investigating that. That includes the police, the ATF, as well as the FBI. A source tells CNN that police right now are looking at surveillance tapes not only from the building, 75 Wall Street, but also from surrounding areas. They're also talking to personnel. They want to make sure to determine whether anyone was fired recently or whether anyone may have had any grievances against any of the companies inside.

Now, this is Barclay's building and its tenants include JP Morgan as well as Dresner Banking.

This explosive device detonated at about 4:40 this morning. Witnesses say the building shook.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DENNIS THEODORE, WALL STREET WORKER: An explosion I've never heard in my life, that's how loud it was. I thought it went off right downstairs in front of my own building. It shook the building, it shook the windows, and I thought the glass was going to come in. I thought the building was going to collapse, that's how loud it was.

(END VIDEO CLIP) FEYERICK: You can see some members from the crime scene unit. They are investigating that immediate area. Again, pieces of the explosive device still in front of that building. Police do want to question a man that witnesses say was running from the building at about the time this explosion occurred. Meanwhile, this entire area of Wall Street cordoned off as police continue their investigation.

Reporting live, Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New York.
