Morning NewsCNN 20: Abortion Doctor Murdered, March 10, 1993Aired March 10, 2000 - 9:36 a.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) SUSAN ROOK, CNN ANCHOR: We begin with a grim milestone in America's battle over abortion. An abortion opponent is in custody tonight, accused of killing a doctor at an abortion clinic in Florida. It is being called the first fatal attack at an abortion facility in the United States. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) (voice-over): It happened outside an abortion clinic in Pensacola, where anti-abortion activists were holding a protest. Police say Dr. David Gunn, who operated the clinic, got out of his car and was shot. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There's a guy, you know, he just -- he just went up, chased the doctor down and just shot him point-blank. ROOK: Michael Griffin of Pensacola was arrested and charged with murder. Police say he calmly surrendered. Witnesses reportedly say Griffin told Dr. Gunn, quote, "don't kill any more babies," just before starting the shooting. Rescue America, the group that organized the protest outside the clinic, says Griffin has shown up at a number of their protests but is not a member of the group. Randall Terry, the head of another anti-abortion group, Operation Rescue, had this response to the killing, quote: "I think it was absolutely wrong for this man to kill the doctor. However, we have to recognize that this doctor was a mass murderer." The shooting comes at a time when abortion clinics report new tactics by anti-abortion activists. Although clinics have been bombed and abortion providers threatened with death, activists say this is the first fatality ever reported at an abortion protest.
