CNN 20: CNN's Havana Bureau Opens, March 17, 1997

Aired March 17, 2000 - 10:21 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Here's a look at "CNN 20" and a look at our Havana bureau that opened just a few years ago.

ANNOUNCER: Bringing you the world for 20 years, this is CNN.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

LINDEN SOLES, CNN ANCHOR: Today marks an important milestone for CNN and journalism at large. We are inaugurating our newest bureau. It's in Havana, Cuba and it's the first U.S.-based news organization in nearly three decades to operate full time there.

Joining us live in the Cuban capital to share her thoughts, our CNN Havana bureau chief Lucia Newman.

Lucia, congratulations on the new posting.

LUCIA NEWMAN, CNN HAVANA BUREAU CHIEF: Thank you, Linden. Well, I'm speaking to you now from the 20th floor of the Havana Libre Hotel...

(END VIDEO CLIP)

LARRY REGISTER, V.P., SPECIAL PROJECTS: We finally were in a position and a country that had not been covered as openly as it should have been, and there were a lot of myths and legends and this and that about Cuba. Well, there we were finally in Cuba with a full- time presence and a full-time bureau. And it has worked over the years. It's given us a chance to go throughout Cuba and cover stories other than crises and other than U.S. Cuba rifts. We could do stories on the people of Cuba, on the country of Cuba, on agriculture, on making cigars, on making rum.

NEWMAN: Despite the very obvious and well-known restrictions on freedom of speech, foreign correspondents such as myself have no restrictions on what we report on. We go where we please and we talk about what we like, what we see fit, what we see as the news.

REGISTER: It's a country that's different from the United States. It's different from many countries. It's one of the last communist countries in the world. But it was a good day that day to open that bureau. (END VIDEOTAPE)
