US Airways Ticket Holders Scramble for Back-Up Plans

Aired March 24, 2000 - 10:02 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Now, the threat of a strike is resonating most strongly along the East Coast, the heart of the USAirways schedule. And not surprisingly, ticket holders are scrambling for some back-up plans today.

CNN's Frank Buckley taking the pulse this morning at LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

Frank, how goes it thus far this morning?

FRANK BUCKLEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, so far, Bill, because the planes are still taking off, the passengers continue to fly US Airways.

Surprisingly, some of the passengers we spoke with didn't even know, or they were not aware that, in fact, there was a labor dispute and in fact their return flight might be jeopardized by this labor dispute.

Gene just mentioned the fact that, yes, a third of the flights in the East are USAirways flights. But, US Airways also services the West, and in fact, it services 38 states with more than 3,200 daily departures throughout its system. That means many, many passengers, in fact more than 150,000 passengers are served daily by US Air. So this is not just an Eastern problem for passengers who fly US Air; this is a potential problem that could affect more than 150,000 passengers daily.

We should say, however, that when it comes to US Airways Express, that is the regional carrier that operates under the US Airways Express banner, those flights will continue to flight, even if there is a shutdown.

Frank Buckley, CNN, reporting live from New York.

HEMMER: All right, Frank, we'll track it throughout the weekend without question on that story.
