Joan Rivers Offers Fashion Hits and Misses

Aired March 27, 2000 - 10:53 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: When the stars walk down the red carpet here in downtown Los Angeles, they, of course, are worried about a number of things. Among them: What will Joan Rivers have to say about what they're wearing? It turns out we ran into Joan at the "Vanity Fair" party, my crew and I, and here's an early peek at what her opinions are on this years's Oscars.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN: Who's the best dressed man and woman?

JOAN RIVERS: I love...

MELISSA RIVERS: Watch Tuesday April 1st -- Saturday April 1st on the fashion review.

JOAN RIVERS: But I also thought that Hilary Swank looked amazing. A lot of them looked great. I thought Hilary looked -- with the diamonds, with the dress -- Jane Fonda.

KAGAN: She cut her hair finally.

JOAN RIVERS: And also the dress. It was like, really, I'm back. look at me.

KAGAN: OK, bow-wows.

JOAN RIVERS: Oh, come on.

MELISSA RIVERS: No, save that one.

JOAN RIVERS: We'll save that one, but I think we all had the same reaction.

MELISSA RIVERS: I'd save that one.

KAGAN: I'm all ears, spill it. Who is it?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: (OFF-MIKE)

MELISSA RIVERS: No, you looked amazing.

JOAN RIVERS: Look at you.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: So do you.

JOAN RIVERS: Angelina Jolie, I thought, just looked like she was "Addams Family III" -- wrong. Wrong because it should be a celebratory outfit.

KAGAN: And men, males? Who did you like?

JOAN RIVERS: They all looked very good this year.

MELISSA RIVERS: Yes, no one looked happier than Michael Clarke Duncan, and that's always what makes a man looked his best. He looked amazing.

KAGAN: And any men who blew it? What about the guys who were in the dresses?

JOAN RIVERS: They looked fabulous.

MELISSA RIVERS: Oh, are you kidding me?

JOAN RIVERS: They carried them off, They had style.

MELISSA RIVERS: Best-dressed couple for sure.

JOAN RIVERS: Oh, best dresses absolutely.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

KAGAN: Well, Joan isn't one to hold back, and she isn't holding back again this year.

And, Billy, one thing I took from that "Vanity Fair" party that you get up close and personal that you don't see on television...

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: What's that?

KAGAN: ... that you might want to keep in mind for next year: Sheer is the theme of the lady's dresses, and lingerie apparently is optional at that party.

HEMMER: You know, I was wondering about that, Daryn.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: He wants to have the assignment next year, Daryn.

HEMMER: Hey, listen, thanks. Great work out there. We'll see you on Wednesday?

KAGAN: Looking forward to it. Get some sleep and I'll fly back tomorrow and be right back with you on Wednesday morning.

HEMMER: Good deal. Thank you, Daryn.

Daryn Kagan live in L.A., Oscar coverage once again this year.

PHILLIPS: What about her choker? HEMMER: Yes, we didn't get around to that.

PHILLIPS: That was pretty neat. We didn't even talk about that.

HEMMER: Daryn, are you still with us?

PHILLIPS: Look at that.

HEMMER: Hey, explain this one. We've got a shot of it.

PHILLIPS: Exactly, we had to bring it up.

KAGAN: This was a loaner -- that is real, by the way -- a loaner from Fred Layton Jewelers in New York City. They asked me, what time will you be done, Daryn, on Monday morning? I said about 9:02. They said, good. We'll see you here at 9:30.

HEMMER: Shop's closing.

KAGAN: They gave that and the matching diamond earrings.

HEMMER: You said it was real...

KAGAN: But it's been a lot of fun to play dress-up.

HEMMER: Quickly, you said it was real, real with what?

KAGAN: Oh, real diamond and pearls.

HEMMER: OK.

PHILLIPS: Yes, right. She won't be back here on Wednesday, she's going to go sell that and be she's going to be off in the Bahamas.

HEMMER: Thanks, Daryn, we'll see you later. Daryn Kagan again, live in L.A.
