Lazaro Gonzalez, Immigration Officials To Meet To Resolve Impasse

Aired March 29, 2000 - 9:10 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We bring you the latest on Elian Gonzalez, who could lose his right to stay in the U.S. within 24 hours. That, unless his Miami relatives agree to comply with the government's demands. The boy's great uncle and federal immigration officials meet once again today, trying to resolve their impasse.

CNN's Susan Candiotti joins us live from Miami this morning with more.

Susan, good morning.

SUSAN CANDIOTTI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Daryn.

That meeting is scheduled for late this afternoon. And the great- uncle of 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez is strongly urged to attend at U.S. immigration headquarters in Miami. At the very least, his lawyers intend to be there.

For the boy's uncle, it is a decision day. If he does not sign a promise to surrender the boy if all appeals are lost -- INS has threatened to revoke the boy's legal status as of 9:00 tomorrow morning -- then, today's meeting will reach a new level, with INS dictating the terms of the surrender.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

KAREN KRAUSHAAR, INS SPOKESPERSON: Under federal immigration law and INS procedure, the government routinely requests written assurances that individuals paroled into the United States will comply with the terms of their parole. The simple assurances we have sought from Lazaro Gonzalez are: that he will cooperate with an orderly transfer of Elian Gonzalez in the event of adverse ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals, and barring emergency injunctive relief from the Supreme Court.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

CANDIOTTI: If immigration revokes the parole of 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez, the attorneys say they do have one more option to try to prevent the boy from being removed from this home. They could go to a court to ask for an injunction. That would prevent the INS from moving forward until the appeals process is complete.

Susan Candiotti, CNN, reporting live in Miami.

KAGAN: Susan, thank you.
