Mobile Home Fire Kills Eight in Georgia

Aired March 29, 2000 - 10:18 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: An overnight fire at a mobile home park in Georgia killed eight people, including an infant. The blaze broke out in a mobile home in Acworth, Georgia. That's about 30 miles northwest of Atlanta.

Reporter Robert Townsend from our affiliate station WAGA has this report.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ROBERT TOWNSEND, WAGA REPORTER (voice-over): A devastated and visibly shaken Tasha Richards just couldn't believe it.

Early this morning, her friend and several of her children were trapped inside their burning mobile home in Cobb County. Investigators say eight members of one family all died.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We don't never wake up during the night, but this time we did. And when we, we seen it. And me and my husband went over and tried to wake them up, but nobody would wake up.

UNIDENTIFIED POLICE OFFICER: We've done a preliminary walk- through. The CO levels are still extremely high, making it dangerous for the investigators to go on the inside. We can determine that there is a mother and an infant and that there are some other folks on the inside. It's too difficult right now with the high CO levels to tell exactly approximately what ages.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

TOWNSEND: Again, eight people died in this fatal fire this morning. Right now, investigators haven't released the victim's names, nor have they determined a cause of the fire. Several of the victims' family members are now here on the scene.

KAGAN: Robert, we don't know their names, but do we know, were these people related? Do we know anything else about them?

TOWNSEND: Daryn, I can tell you it was definitely one family. The adult women who was killed was apparently 37 years old. The children, they ranged from just 11 weeks to 19 -- Daryn.

KAGAN: Very sad.

Robert Townsend, from our affiliate WAGA, thank you for that report.
