Aired April 4, 2000 - 10:33 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Have a look at today's "CNN 20" segment and the Kurds flight from Iraq in 1991.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE, APRIL 4, 1991)

RICK SALLINGER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): As many as 3 million Kurds on the move, their belongings strapped to their back, fleeing Iraq to survive, but in the process risking their lives on treacherous mountain passes. An estimated 200,000 are headed to or already hurdled at the border with Turkey. Iran has announced its border is open to the Kurds. Another 100,000 are believed to be moving there.

But, for some, it is too late, hundreds have died already, many of them babies, medical treatment is in short supply. Kurdish exiles say some have been burned in napalm attacks by the forces of Saddam Hussein.

In Britain and other country, Kurds are pleading for aid, a delegate went to Number 10 Downing Street, the residence of the prime minister, to request help for those fleeing Northern Iraq.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They are being taken out to the mountains without any protection from anywhere, and this is the new world order? I'm sorry, this is the destruction of the third world.

SALLINGER: A few hours later, Prime Minister John Major announced a 20 million pound donation to United Nations relief efforts, that is equivalent of $36 million. Britain will also donate two plane loads of relief supplies.

(on camera): While the Kurds welcome the relief efforts, they fear it may be a case of too little too late.
