Vijay Singh Holds Off Some of Golf's Greatest Stars to Win Masters

Aired April 10, 2000 - 9:11 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Vijay Singh learned to play golf by watching videotape and practicing with hand-me-down clubs in his native country of Fiji in the South Pacific, and island nation there. Now he's a master of the game, literally, as of yesterday. Singh held off challenges from some of the game's greatest stars to win this year's Masters.

CNN Sports Illustrated's Jim Huber now with more from Augusta

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JIM HUBER, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Amen Corner at Augusta National, once again, was the end of a prayer. Vijay Singh took advantage of great breaks at the 11th and 12th holes, and a mistake by his closest competitor on 13 Sunday, and won 64th Masters.

VIJAY SINGH, MASTERS CHAMPION: That was probably the biggest break I got for the day was on 12. And I got up and down. It wasn't an easy bunker shot, but I got up and down, which -- it saved the day for me.

DAVID DUVAL, THIRD PLACE FINISHER: When he hit it in the water made five, yes, and then an even better break on 12. So, you know, he's looking at makings six and five or six and six, and makes a five and a three. And, yes, you need those kind of things to win a golf tournament. And, unfortunately for me, I didn't get those kind of breaks this week.

HUBER: While Singh may have had the breaks, he also used a most unconventional method of winning here. Very few have ever had a poor putting weekend and still taken home a green jacket. Singh finished tied for 45th in putting out of the 57 men in the field and still won going away. The reason: He finished fist in greens and regulation.

TIGER WOODS, FIFTH PLACE FINISHER: Just three rounds, he was number one in greens and reg. And if you're number one in greens and reg. around this golf course , it's hard to make all your putts. You're going to have some two-putts. And all you do is make enough and you're going to be right there in the ball game.

ERNIE ELS, SECOND PLACE FINISHER: He must have hit the ball really well, you know. I don't know what his putting statistics were this week, but he must have been making some putts. He made more putts than I did, definitely, I assure you that.

SINGH: If you had asked me the question two years ago, I probably said, you know, I don't think I can win this for the way I was putting. But, you know, Augusta's green is so severe that if you're not a good putter, you're not going to win this. It's simple as that. But I think my attitude change was a big boost to that and that's probably why I'm sitting up here.

HUBER: The tall man from the island of Fiji one the PGA Championship two summers ago, but a victory here Sunday moves him to a far different plateau.

SINGH: It's always nice to win two, you know. You win one, it may be a -- you know, you may have some lucky breaks and do it. But to win twice, I think it's the self-satisfaction that you can do it again. And who knows, you know, maybe I'm going to win again.

HUBER: From the Masters at Augusta, I'm Jim Huber.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: He said two years ago that he hated that tournament, left there in disgust. His wife said, if that's your attitude, then why go back?

HEMMER: Well, he came back for a good reason.

KAGAN: He certainly did.

HEMMER: Great tournament this past weekend, too.
