CNN 20: Verdict in 2nd LAPD Trial, April 17, 1993

Aired April 17, 2000 - 9:41 a.m. ET

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DAVID FRENCH, CNN ANCHOR: Two convictions, two acquittals. After deliberating a week, the jury renders its decisions in the trial of four Los Angeles police officers accused of violating Rodney King's civil right.

UNIDENTIFIED CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Sergeant Stacey Koon (ph) never moved muscle, Officer Laurence Powel (ph) sat stoically. These where the two that the jury decided violated Rodney King's civil rights. Former Officer Timothy Wind (ph) crossed himself before his verdict of not guilty was read. Officer Theodore Bozino (ph) bowed his head and cried as he too was found not guilty.

The jury had reached its verdicts Friday afternoon. U.S. District Judge John Davies (ph) decided to seal them until 7:00 a.m. Saturday.

Reaction outside on the courthouse plaza to the guilty verdicts was loud cheers.

BARRY KOWALSKI, ASST. DISTRICT ATTORNEY: A year ago, the conscience of the community, the conscience of the nation cried out for justice and this verdict provides justice.

CNN CORRESPONDENT: Prosecutor Steven Klimer (ph) said, it also provides a message for police departments.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That they can use force that is reasonable and necessary to make an arrest and no more.

CNN CORRESPONDENT: Following last year's state trial, the jury essentially acquitted all of the officers. Should those jurors feel as though they made a mistake?

LAURIE LEVENSON, FMR. FEDERAL PROSECUTOR: It might have been righteous on the evidence they heard in that case, but we heard a different case this time. The federal government was ready to go. They presented much more evidence. Rodney King testified, experts testified, civilian witnessed testified, and I think that made a difference.
